Calm rules
Safe enough if you install the real suite. Dangerous if you install a stranger’s EXE.
WPS Office is widely used proprietary software from Kingsoft. Ads and aggressive default-app prompts are not malware. Fake download buttons are. Keep the official build updated. Treat Chinese vendor origin as a compliance question for some governments and contractors — not as a campfire story. This site never hosts installers.
The only rule that prevents most disasters
Install from named official places: wps.com, the download center, the Windows and Linux product pages, the Microsoft Store listing 9NSGM705MQWC, Google Play cn.wps.moffice_eng, or the App Store listing id609397708. If a search ad, a YouTube comment, or a “full 2026 crack” page offers a faster button, the button is the threat. Security researchers have documented update-channel and installer-impersonation abuse against office software for years. Your defense is boring: type the vendor address yourself.
This handbook will not describe cracks, patches, or hosts-file tricks. If someone told you a “cleaner” APK removes ads by removing the signature, that person is not helping you.
Ads and file associations are product behavior
The free Windows skin shows ads. It may offer to become the default app for DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PDF, and a longer list than you wanted. That is annoying. It is not proof the process is a trojan. Decline the blanket default. Set associations in Windows Settings yourself. If an ad covers a dialog, finish the dialog after you close the ad, or consider Pro+ if ads are the only pain — after you read pricing.
Antivirus may flag a freshly signed website installer. Confirm the publisher and the URL. A flag on a file named WPS-Office-Setup-2026.exe that arrived from a blog is a delete. SmartScreen on Windows is a prompt to think, not a prompt to disable SmartScreen globally. After a verified official install, let the official updater run. Skipping updates “to stay invisible” leaves known bugs in place.
What you should actually worry about
Macro-enabled attachments remain a classic office-suite risk in every brand. Do not enable macros on an XLSM from a stranger. WPS is not a magic filter. Treat unexpected documents like you would in Excel. Cloud sync means a file you put in WPS Cloud is on someone else’s computers. That is true of Drive and OneDrive too. If a document cannot leave the building, keep it on an encrypted disk and skip the account. The web version is the wrong place for a classified folder.
WPS AI sends prompts to a service. Daily limits on Pro+ do not make the prompt local. Do not paste patient data, unpublished grades, or source code you do not have the right to share. That is policy. Students and teachers have extra academic-integrity reasons; see those pages.
Vendor origin without the soundtrack
Kingsoft is a Chinese company. WPS is a Chinese-origin product with a large global user base. Some governments, defense contractors, and regulated industries restrict software by jurisdiction. If you are in one of those environments, you already have a list. Check the list. Do not install a personal copy of WPS on a governed laptop to “get around procurement.” That is a career problem wearing a PDF icon.
If you are a student on a personal laptop writing a literature essay, origin is a fact you can know, not a reason to run a Western-sounding malware installer instead. Fearmongering blogs that treat every process named kingsoft as an implant are not a substitute for a threat model. Leftover folders under %AppData%\kingsoft after uninstall are ordinary application data. They are not a secret second OS. Clean them if you want; instructions live on uninstall.
Store ratings — Play around 4.5 from millions of votes, App Store around 4.8 from tens of thousands in Gizmodo’s August 2026 snapshot — measure popularity and crash sentiment. They do not measure supply-chain integrity. Use them as one signal. Use the official channel as the control.
Permissions on phones
Android will ask for storage or media access and a camera for the scanner. Deny contacts if you do not need them. iOS uses the Files picker and camera the same way. MDM-managed school devices may block the app; that is the school’s call. Sideloading to evade MDM is how you lose the device.
What this handbook will not claim
We have not audited Kingsoft’s source code. We do not issue a certification. We do not tell a defense contractor that a personal install is fine. We also do not tell a literature student that a Play Store app with millions of ratings is a nation-state implant. Those are different threat models wearing the same product name. If a blog post only has one paragraph and a scary stock photo, it is not a threat model.
Gizmodo’s August 2026 directory numbers — Play around 4.5 from nearly six million votes, App Store around 4.8 from about 17.8 thousand — belong in the popularity column. They sit next to the official package IDs, not in place of them. If your question is “can I write a lab report on a personal laptop,” the official-channel rule is enough. If your question is “can this binary sit on a governed network,” ask the people who already wrote the allowed-software list.
A short hardening list
- Bookmark official URLs. Stop using search ads for the word “download.”
- Prefer Store / Play / App Store if your institution requires catalog installs.
- Keep the suite updated from that same channel.
- Set file associations yourself. Do not click “all formats.”
- Skip Cloud and AI when the file is sensitive.
- Never enable macros from unexpected mail.
- If policy forbids the vendor, use the issued suite. LibreOffice and Microsoft 365 exist; see compare.
Hardware floors (dual-core, 2 GB RAM, 4 GB disk on Windows per Kingsoft help) are about performance, not trust. A slow PC is not a safer PC. Related: Windows, Linux packages, macros and fidelity, who Kingsoft is.
