How-to · Defaults
Double-click is a setting, not a loyalty oath.
WPS often offers to own DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF on install. Windows will not always give those types back when you uninstall. Fix it in Settings → Apps → Default apps → defaults by file type. That is the whole plot. A leftover blank icon is not proof Microsoft Office was deleted.
Decide on purpose, on day one
Living with two suites is normal: campus Word, home WPS; LibreOffice for ODF, WPS for the weekly PPTX. The failure is leaving the choice to the last installer that asked. On first run, WPS may pop a defaults dialog. You can decline and still use the suite via the Start menu. You can accept and still change your mind later. This page is later.
Official WPS still comes from wps.com/download or Store listing 9NSGM705MQWC. If two tiles named WPS appear in the default-apps picker, read the publisher. A look-alike is how a search-ad install steals PDF.
Windows Settings → Default apps by file type
Open Settings. Go to Apps, then Default apps. Windows 11 emphasizes search-by-type and “Choose defaults by file type.” Windows 10 used a similar list with slightly different labels. The idea is stable even when the pixels move: find .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .pdf, and also .doc / .xls / .ppt if you still receive museum files. Click each row. Pick Word or WPS Writer, Excel or Spreadsheet, PowerPoint or Presentation, and a PDF app you actually want (WPS PDF, Edge, Adobe, or another reader).
Then test. Double-click a sample in Documents, not a file on a network path that forces a different ProgID. Right-click → Open with → choose the app → Always is the same decision from Explorer. If Always does not stick, you are usually in a managed PC: school policy, a Store stub, or a broken leftover after uninstall. That leftover story is Office after uninstall.
After WPS is gone
Uninstallers sometimes leave WPS owning the extension or clear the table and walk away. Word may still sit in Program Files. The icon is empty. Microsoft Q&A is full of this pattern. Reset the four types. If Word does not appear in the picker, Repair Office from Settings or the Microsoft 365 installer, then assign again. Do not download a “restore Office associations.exe.” See uninstall.
PDF is the type people forget. A missing PDF handler opens the Store or nothing. Point it at Edge if you only need to read, or at the reader your shop already trained staff on.
macOS and Linux, short
On a Mac, Get Info → Open with → Change All. On Linux, the desktop’s default applications or MIME settings own application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document. After a Deb install, WPS may grab those MIME types; switch back to LibreOffice per type if that is the lab rule. Fonts are a different fight — Linux fonts.
What this will not fix
A file that opens in the right app and looks wrong is compatibility or fonts, not associations. A file that will not open because WPS crashes is launch. A file you deleted is recovery. Associations only decide which icon gets the click.
The first-run dialog and the silent steal
Website installers are more likely to ask, loudly, whether WPS should become the default for Office types. Store installs sometimes register quietly after an update. Either way, a week later you double-click a syllabus and Writer opens instead of Word — or the reverse after a Microsoft 365 repair. Neither suite is “wrong.” You simply did not write the decision down. Write it down. A shop till wants WPS for speed. A thesis machine that must match a graduate-school Word template wants Word for the last save. A PDF-heavy freelancer may want WPS PDF for markup and Word for DOCX. Mixed ownership is allowed. Mixed ownership you did not choose is how support tickets start.
Windows 11’s Default apps page also groups “Microsoft Word” as an app with many types underneath. You can set the app as default for its listed types in one click, then override PDF if you do not want Word’s PDF handler — or WPS’s. Do the group click only if you mean it. The by-file-type list is slower and harder to mess up. If a type shows “Choose a default,” that is the empty-icon state this handbook keeps mentioning. Pick an app that is installed. If the picker is empty, Repair or reinstall the suite you want, then return. Do not pick a Store suggestion that is a different publisher with a similar red icon.
Email attachments add a twist. Outlook and some browsers keep their own “open with” memory. After you fix Windows defaults, open the attachment from the saved file in Documents once so you are not debugging Outlook’s last choice. OneDrive and WPS Cloud can also open a file in a web viewer that is neither Word nor Writer. That is not an association bug. It is a cloud preview. Download and double-click to test the real default.
If you are about to uninstall WPS, set Word/Excel/PowerPoint as defaults before you remove Kingsoft. The uninstall will still surprise some machines, but you have a better chance. After removal, walk the four types again. That sequence is the shop-owner story on stories and the full exit map on uninstall.
Numbered association steps
- Write down the owner you want for DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and PDF.
- Settings → Apps → Default apps → Choose defaults by file type (or the Windows 10 equivalent).
- Set
.docx,.xlsx,.pptx,.pdf. Check old extensions if you use them. - Double-click a sample of each. Use Open with → Always if a one-off is wrong.
- If the desired app is missing, Repair Microsoft Office or install official WPS, then repeat.
- Skip forum .reg files. If policy locks defaults, talk to IT rather than fighting the same dialog every login.
